We’re Getting a Head Start on Negotiation Skills
Some information was recently released that quickly became a topic of conversation around the Atlas Promotions HQ. The World Economic Forum has determined that, by the year 2020, negotiation will be one of the most important skills required for success.
Rather than wait until then to find out more about this topic, we decided to learn as much as we could about negotiating now. Here’s what we’ve learned so far:
- It’s Always Better to Ask: Wayne Gretzky, a famous hockey player, once said “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” We’re not sure if he meant to provide such a profound and universally-applicable piece of wisdom, but this sage advice applies to negotiating as much as it does to hockey.
- Ask for a Little More Than You Want, but Be Reasonable: We respect high expectations at Atlas Promotions, but it pays to be practical as well. For instance, when entering a salary negotiation, it’s a good idea to know what the pay range is for a particular role, and then shoot for the high end (or maybe even a little more).
- All of Life Is a Negotiation: When we were children, we frequently attempted to negotiate things like dessert and bedtime with our parents. As adults, we may have to bargain with a flatmate or spouse about bills and household chores. In short, negotiating is something we’ve done our entire lives, and being practiced at it will make an impact on every part of our reality.
