Although we each have our own perceptions of success, we all share the desire to achieve it. There are plenty of steps people take to achieve their goals – from learning new skills and finding coaches to meditating and eating well. Conversation around the Atlas Promotions water cooler has gone in another direction, however. We’ve been discussing the less common (but just as effective) methods of reaching the top.

For instance, people tend to deem nervousness as a bad thing. They do whatever it takes to calm themselves down. In “Psyched Up: How the Science of Mental Preparation Can Help You Succeed,” Daniel McGinn suggests a different approach. He writes, “For people who suffer from extreme nerves…don’t obsess over calming down. Instead, tell yourself that the sweaty palms and the racing heart are a positive sign, because they signify excitement: You’re lucky to be here and to have this opportunity to prove how good you are.”

Quality often overshadows quantity, but we don’t let it take the back burner in the Atlas Promotions office. We take this lesson from Adam Grant. In “Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World,” he writes, “On average, creative geniuses [aren’t] qualitatively better in their fields than their peers. They simply produced a greater volume of work, which gave them more variation and a higher chance of originality…To generate a handful of masterworks, Mozart composed more than 600 pieces before his death at 35, Beethoven produced 650 in his lifetime…Einstein wrote papers on general and special relativity that transformed physics, but many of his 248 publications had minimal impact.”
